Contest Bonus Question # 2: What Would You Do With A Free $100?

The Contest is still open, for anyone who has yet to enter or who would like to pimp the contest for an extra entry. Or both. Both is always an idea I can get behind.

(................)

If you suddenly came into a hundred bucks, what would you do with it?

And of course, when I say what would you do with it, I mean what card-related item(s) would you purchase? Do you have something specific in mind, a particular card you've long yearned after? Or would you simply look to knock cards or sets off of your Want List?

Simply answer the question, and earn yourself another entry into my first ever contest.

You'll see my answer in the near future. Gotta wait for a package or two first.

Hint hint.

  1. If I had a free $100 for cards I would try to get as close as possible to completing my 1973 Topps set. Right now I'm about 45 cards short -- mostly high numbers.

  2. First, I'd pick up a 1967 Topps Mickey Mantle without a doubt. I could probably score a poorer conditioned one for about $50-$60. After that, I'd go after a few want list related items, such as a Yankees 1/1, a Rivera rookie, and a Maris Topps Yankees card (an original). That would probably get me right around $100.

  3. I'd go immediately to a Koufax card from the '50s/'60s.

  4. I'd try to split the bill between a decently damaged 1955 Bowman Kaline and a nice Ripken auto.

  5. pick up a couple (or one) autos of players I don't have yet.
With free money I wouldn't go after my normal wants, but would blow it on something a little more high end.

  6. One or more vintage Bob Fellers.

  7. I would also take a chance at maybe a cut set. Maybe even Panini Americana something like that. Something I normally would not get.

  8. At this very second, probably put it towards another hobby box of 2011 Ginter. Otherwise, probably try make more inroads with my A&G mini sets.

  9. Ginter is coming $100 would do alright to slow that freight train.

  10. I'd start by picking up a lot of minor league team sets; I can get 100 late-80s sets for $50, which should add about 80-90 cards to my type collection. I'd use the rest on a few autographs I want.

  11. I'd probably put it towards a box of 2011 A&G or I'd finish my Hunter Pence rainbow just cause I'm annoyed it isn't finished yet.

  12. I would buy the highest high-end set that would be covered by said c-note.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would head over to the display case at my LCS that I always skip since the cards a re high priced but wit a found hundee I would grab some nice pricey cards.

  14. First, I'd try to get a printing plate or two for my collection. Then I'd pick up some Triple-A Redbirds over the past few years, and I'd finish up with a few singles off my want list.

  15. I would plan on knocking off a good bit of my missing cards from the '71 Topps set. Reality would be that I would head to Target and blow through almost all of it on blasters or loose packs of recent releases.

  16. If I were to spend it on cards, I'd do my best on what I've got in my all-time Top 10:

    1. 1956 Topps Jackie Robinson #30
    2. 1965 Topps Athletics Rookie Stars (Catfish Hunter) #526
    3. 1992 Bowman Mariano Rivera #302
    4. 1995 Bowman Vladimir Guerrero #90
    5. 1969 Topps Reggie Jackson #260
    6. 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly #248
    7. 1957 Topps Frank Robinson #35
    8. 1963 Fleer Sandy Koufax #42
    9. 1967 Topps Maury Wills #570
    10. 1981 Topps Football Joe Montana #216

  17. Hmmmm...... An extra C-note? For the collection:

1- finally complete the RC tri-fecta by picking up an '84 Fleer Mattingly

2- complete my son's 2011 Gypsy Queen Master set

3-work on the T-206 Yankees (New York, American) team set

A David Robertson RC has become a recent WANT as well....

Could always blow it on some blasters at Walmart/Target, too!

  18. I would head down to Frank and Sons to buy a $50 box of something that I havent opened before. Then with the remaining $50, I'd check out some vintage from the Brooklyn era. I would also make sure a few bucks are left over to get some tacos from the taco stand outside the show.

  19. There's a certain Beckett marketplace with some jumbo diamond king cards and other assorted cheap but hard to find '90s stuff that I could dump $50 at in a heartbeat, and the other half I'd use at my LCS, since the owner there has taken pretty good care of me in the past.

  20. Great choices guys, I'm really enjoying reading through all of your comments.

If you know someone who hasn't answered and might like in on a chance to get some freebies, tell 'em!

  21. For a $100, I'd send it to GCRL and see if he could get me 5 more blasters like this one:

    http://playattheplatedude.blogspot.com/2010/05/best-blaster-ever.html

That should help put a dent in the Senators for me.

  22. First, I'd get a hold of a John Stockton Auto. Then I'd go budget shopping on the Bay for any of my other major wants: Bowman Chrome Hochevar parallels, 1910 Murad collegiate cards, manupatches, etc. I'd do my best to take my time and not make any hasty purchases.

    ReplyDelete
  23. $100 big ones eh? I would probably upgrade my Jon Lester RC Chrome Auto with it. Maybe sell my plain refractor and use that money plus the $100 to get maybe a blue refractor auto.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would pick up a 1955 All-American Jim Thorpe or a 1961 Fleer Lou Gehrig.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'd knock out some more vintage Cardinals on my want list, probably a bigger name player.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I would try to finsh my 1978 set and the go after Masterpieces, Allen & Ginter and Gypsy Queen set needs.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hmm tought one for me. I've been working on a complete super set of Milwaukee Brewers Topps teams sets for awhile now but since I have most of the 70's, hense most expensive sets, done. I think I would have to apply it to my vintage packer needs maybe some pricier Bart Starr cards or some early higher grade Bowman football. Or just dump it on cheap wax and dive into the cards like Scrooge McDuck.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wow Greg, you've got me on this one. I haven't collected cards in many, many years, and a large majority of my sets came on behalf of my Dad. You know I'm more of a memorabilia guy anyway. Hmmm...if I had to get cards though, I'd have to try for another 60's Koufax (I have a '62 Topps). Either that, or I'd try to replace a 1956 Duke Snider my Dad had as a kid that he had (gasp!) taped in a memory album from when he was in the Shriners Children's Hospital in Philadelphia.

  29. Orioles Crown Autos on eBay of course. Most likely of deceased players.

    ReplyDelete
  30. $100 won't get a high grade card, but my uncle gave me his 1957 Topps set (yes, set) minus the Mantle and Brooks Robinson RC, I've long been negligent in finding those cards at decent prices.

    ReplyDelete
  31. There isn't really a card I'm chasing in the $100 range, unless I could luck into a '65 OPC Mays or Clemente in semi-solid shape and running slightly under value.

There are two cards I need to finish '63-64 Topps Hockey, though. Two Eds - Westfall and Johnston, probably run $85 between them. The last bit could go for '74 OPC, which is proving a significant pain to finish.

    ReplyDelete
  32. more autographed stuff for my collection

    ReplyDelete
  33. i think if i had 100 dollars right now, i would try to start my collection of cards because i am just a beginner at this point and hope to collect as close to all the cards that anyone in this site has. Thats what i would do.

    ReplyDelete
  34. If i had a free 100 i would definately get a 73 clemente and and vintage ted williams red sox card i could get

    ReplyDelete
  35. My free $100 would go towards Orioles autographs. Shocker, right?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think I'd go for the oldest Topps Factory Set I could find for $100. Then I'd probably fight with myself about how many years further back and how much more money I wanted to put into it, and wind up with the oldest $150-$200 set I could fine.
