Overrated Fantasy Football Players At Each Position

This is a guest post written by Mark Driggs.

During fantasy football draft season, the word overrated gets thrown around quite a bit. There are obviously differing opinions all over the Internet, but some look a little more obvious than others. Here is a look at an overrated player at each position, followed by an explanation why they should be avoided.

Cam Newton

In fantasy football circles, Cam Newton is an elite quarterback. He might not be a prolific passer just yet, but his running game makes up for things. However, Carolina is probably going to be a little bit more careful with him running the football. Considering the fact that he now has to work with a lot of new faces, he could be due for significant regression in 2014.

Doug Martin

When the 2013 season started, people thought that the second-year player would really take off as one of the best running backs in the game. However, he got off to a slow start, and then he had to deal with a shoulder injury. He is preparing for 2014 is a different player, as he is no longer the only featured running back on the roster. The new offensive coordinator for the Buccaneers has already stated that he will go with a running back committee instead of one featured guy this year. That is bad news for Martin fans.

Cordarrelle Patterson

Minnesota is very high on second-year wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, but he might not be ready to break out just yet. It really is out of his control, as Minnesota has been unable to find a franchise quarterback just yet. The competition is between Matt Cassel, Christian Ponder and Teddy Bridgewater, but none of them throw the deep ball consistently enough to allow Patterson to have success.

Kyle Rudolph

See the explanation for Patterson above? The same pretty much applies to Randolph. Minnesota still has a chance to be decent this year, but they are going to be relying on running back workhorse Adrian Peterson on offense. No one else on their offense looks all that enticing in fantasy football.

  1. I thought I hit gold when Martin was still there in the 2nd round for me last year...that didn't work out too well though. Fortunately I got huge value from Bush and Stacy in Rounds 4&5.

  2. Martin's 2 main backups are both injured. Look for him to be the main guy for at least a little while.
