Here's another excellent pickup for my collection of tobacco cards from the legendary Monster. It was also a part of my small submission to SGC and it looks oh so stellar framed up nicely in black. I have always gravitated to oddball sets and oddball errors/anomalies in sets. Today's card certainly fits the bill as Bob Bescher (Hands In Air) has no name on the bottom and a full name on top.
Bescher was born in Ohio, about three hours from where my mom was born. He led the NL in stolen bases four times; punched cows on a cattle ranch; attended the University of Notre Dame for high school; worked as an oil inspector for the state of Ohio post-baseball; and was nicknamed "The London Flash." He died in a car accident when his vehicle was hit by a train.
I love the pose, but name on top with no name on bottom was the true selling point.
That's fascinating, because it indicates that the cards weren't printed the way modern ones are. They appear to have made entire sheets of one card, or at least sheets where the same card is stacked together, which is very different from how Topps and other manufacturers usually do it.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there are pretty great breakdowns of the printing process to be found online, but I've never done the digging. That being said, the printing process on these does seem really unique compared with what Topps has done over the years. Leads to some awesome scrap cards! I really need to do some reading on it!
DeleteThat's certainly different!
ReplyDeleteAnd I totally dig different!
