Ever Collect A Guy Just Because He's On Your Fantasy Team?

I find myself doing that with one player in particular: Alex Gordon. Not that he isn't collect-worthy otherwise, but prior to this season I don't believe I had one of his cards. Certainly not any hits. Granted, I only got back into the collecting game last year. Which sort of defeats my argument.

Anyways, I definitely have begun to seek out his hits now.

My original question stands. Regardless of how poorly I followed that question up. Anyhoo, below are my two newest Gordon additions. I'm particularly pleased with the 2006 Sterling Auto Refractor - 191/199 - which I was able to snag for less than some of the non-slabbed, non-refractor versions were going for on the Bay back when I finalized this purchase. $14.75 for the graded Gordon, which is much, much prettier than the scan makes it appear to be.

  1. Never a massive PC, but I've picked up cards of a bunch of players who I never would've found without fantasy sports.

Of course, same deal with Madden 04 and 07...as I've mentioned before much of even my Seneca fandom started with Madden. Is that better or worse than collecting because of fantasy sports? lol.

  2. I was wondering about the Seneca thing, Mooss, because I'd never gotten to read the part where you explained it. If I went by Madden '04 mojo as a criteria for collecting players, I'd have huge Antwaan Randle El and James Farrior collections. Man, I've done some unholy things with those guys. Actually, come to think of it, at least some of my interest in Joe Namath (admittedly, the first football player I ever knew by name) and Don Maynard is related to the unholy beatings I'd administer on people with them in Madden '94.

A lot of why I collect the trainwreck that is Hanley Ramirez has to do with him being on my main fantasy team for almost the entire time he's been in the majors. (I actually let him sit on the wire for the first month he was with the Marlins, but I ended the previous season with him on my roster so no one else could keep him.) Carl Crawford started out that way for me, too, but I'm having kind of a Carl Crawford mid-life crisis now that he's on the Sox.

  3. I guess I never did explain it on the blog. I've been asked a lot in forum private messages but I guess I'll have to blog about it someday now haha.

  4. I used to pick up a card or two for my basketball or football teams, but I never wavered on baseball. I think it is because with football 1 game means A LOT in fantasy so you have to root for your team. In baseball, if I have Roy Halladay on my team and he is pitching against the Rox...I hope he gets shelled. I can make it up later.

  5. I have thought about getting a Roberto Luongo jersey because he has been my #1 goalie the past few in fantasy hockey. Luckily, stats in the Cup don't count in fantasy.

  6. I probably never would have started collecting Billy Butler if he wasn't on my fantasy team. Now he's my favorite current player.
