I recently stumbled across a card I had to have. It wasn't a player I collect, or a set I collect, or a team I collect. While the set is cool and I was happy to add my first card from said set, the driving force behind my desire to own this card is that the player's nickname was not just Cocaina, but it was listed on the back of this 1945-46 Caramelo Deportivo beauty.
Manuel Garcia is his legal name and it's been slabbed an SGC 20. It was less than half a blaster and is the second Cuban issue in my collection, joining Christy Mathewson. It's a beautiful vintage pickup.
Here's the legendary back. I had hoped to pick up a couple more cards from the set from the same seller on eBay, but he stopped messaging me back.
Lol. Wonder how he got that nickname...
ReplyDeleteSomething totally not illegal, I'm sure :)
DeleteI was wondering about the name too. I found that Buck O’Neil wrote about the guy in his book. He said they called him Cocaina because he had a wicked curveball that made hitters go numb.
ReplyDeleteHaha that's awesome! Great info Corky, thanks for sharing!
