A Fantastic T206 Addition: Gavvy Cravath, HR King, Slabbed a PSA 2.5!

Today's post features my latest T206 pickup as well as a Southern California native: Gavvy Cravath. He was Babe Ruth before Babe Ruth, establishing just about every major home run record that Babe would break soon thereafter. He also had a cannon for an arm and led the league in outfield assists numerous times. I highly recommend everyone read the SABR write-up on Cravath.

The card is graded a PSA 2.5 and has nice eye-appeal even with a hint of paper loss around Gavvy's junk. He was nicknamed Gavvy after reportedly killing a seagull in a game and the Mexican fans in attendance yelling "Gaviota" which means seagull. The word was shortened to Gavvy and stuck.

He led an extremely interesting life, working as a fumigator and telegraph operator before a long trek to the bigs. Post-career, he became a judge. He was so feared as a home run hitter that in the 1915 World Series against Boston, the Red Sox elected not to pitch some guy named Babe Ruth because they were worried about Cravath repeatedly taking him deep.
