Brian Giles? It Just Never Ends

The Dodgers have signed Brian Giles - Brian Giles?!?! - to a minor league, 1-year deal. Invitation to Spring Training included.

I really don't know what to say anymore, and I've stopped guessing what the hell Ned Colletti is trying to do. My initial thought: Xavier Paul, Brian Barton, Jason Repko, Reed Johnson.

Giles, 39 and a native of El Cajon, CA, has played for 15 seasons, splitting time between Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and San Diego.

The career numbers are actually quite impressive: .400 OBP, .502 SLG %, 136 OPS+. The man knows how to take a walk. All of this would have been great, if not for the fact that he's 39. Oh, and he may have beat his girlfriend, while pregnant, causing her to miscarry. Lovely.

  1. I don't see this as a bad signing at all. He's a veteran and will provide a known quantity if healthy. He certainly wont take any innings in the field and can be to us what Stairs was to the Phillies the last few years. Its a minor league deal. Calm the F down.

  2. The Dodgers are raiding the grave yard and the senior centers while passing up younger players that would probably work out better. Why pay anything to this washed up woman hating piece of s..t? Should be interesting to see how he and Torre hit it off if he's ever called up.

  3. I actually don't care about the alleged incident *from a baseball perspective*, just thought it should be pointed out, as that was what he was dealing with last season, along with the injury that prevented him from playing.

Again, as has been pointed out over at MSTI, this would have been great years ago. I like that he's willing to take a walk, but there are safer in-house options: Paul, Repko, Barton.

Lefties are in-house too, Mientkiewicz and DeWitt, and now Amezaga.

And Stairs was actually quite awful last year, and the year before he only had the one big hit. Why keep a potential black hole on the team for the chance he might come up big at some point?

It's a minor league deal, but he's a veteran, so Torre will be salivating to keep him over a younger player.

  4. Dusto_magnifico is a real name?
How is that different from anonymous?
Don't think one warrants the other entitlement to name calling.
    Just say'n...

  5. Gotta side with anonymous on this one. No name calling is needed, though I'm usually not in the mood to enforce it.

Plus, I get so few comments as is, let's TRY to keep them post-related haha.
