(Zack) Wheat Wednesday: A 1927 Philadelphia Athletics Oddball Score!

Here's another oddball Zack Wheat item to add to the PC as I seek out new and exciting pieces of the legendary Dodgers' outfielder. I always enjoy finding and landing a new Wheat and when it hails from his short time with the Philadelphia A's, it's an ever cooler feeling as he has so little as a member of that super team.

I'm not sure what baseball publication this was cut out of but it features the 1927 A's with Zack's floating head top left. I'm unsure of why Ty Cobb isn't featured -- it must have been published just before he signed with the club as a free agent -- but fellow HOFers Jimmie Foxx and Eddie Collins also make appearances.

1939 Goudey Premiums Black & White: The One and Only Jimmie Foxx

This was acquired so long ago the pandemic had not yet hit. It was a pickup from the card shop I used to work for and I knew I needed it the moment I laid my eyes on it. Jimmie Foxx is criminally underrated as a player and any chance to pick up a playing-era card of his at a good price is a chance I don't let pass me by.

Joining the '34 Batter-Up I also nabbed from my old job is this gorgeous 1939 Goudey Premiums Black & White, already slabbed an SGC 60 upon purchase. Foxx is leaping above first base to make a catch, fully extended.

Just as clean as the front is the reverse. The backs on these are absolutely fantastic and I dig how they were geared towards making kids better ballplayers. This one aims to impart "How To Bat" to anyone in possession of it.

Another wonderful vintage pickup is catalogued.

An Underrated Hall of Fame T206 Pickup: Eddie Collins, PSA 3 (MK)!

I added another gorgeous Hall of Fame T206 to my collection early in December. My boss bought it one day from a regular and after some deliberation I decided I couldn't let a good deal on a great tobacco card pass me by.

Eddie Collins is a reasonably priced but tougher HOFer in The Monster despite being one of the three best second baseman of all-time. Collins might be best known as a member of the Black Sox who wasn't found to be in on the scam but his numbers are insane. Also, his nickname was Cocky. That's tremendous.

The back yields the "MK" designation due to someone putting the initials W.R. plus what is either an e or w below it. I think it's a cool touch and I view this kind of writing in a similar fashion to the stamps many T206s have on their reverse.

Collins, interestingly enough, played one year with my main man Zack Wheat on a stacked (at least in name value) 1927 Philadelphia Athletics team that also included some dudes named Ty Cobb and Jimmie Foxx.

Corey Seager Graded Rookie Pickup: 2014 Bowman Draft, Asia Black.

Here's a nice looking but lower-end Corey Seager rookie I recently snagged from work in a two-card purchase. Both cards were bought from the same customer and I instantly knew I would want both for myself. This was easily the cheaper of the two (the sweet Jimmie Foxx Batter-Up card I posted earlier in the week).

This is the Asia Black parallel of Seager's 2014 Bowman Draft Top Prospects card. It's been slabbed a PSA 9 and while it's more aesthetically-pleasing than it is valuable, they don't pop up graded for sale all that often.

Jimmie Foxx 1934 Batter-Up: PSA 2!

A customer who has been coming in about once every week and a half to sell off parts of his collection recently brought in a neat vintage oddball I knew I had to scoop up. I only had one card in my collection from this particular set and no cards of this player in-hand. I was more than happy to pay VCP on this gorgeous PSA 2 1934 Batter-Up of the one and only Jimmie Foxx!

Foxx has two cards in the Batter-Up set with this being far more affordable than the Boston version which also includes a different image. It presents exceedingly well for being slabbed a 2. The card comes in like 6 color variants but I believe this is the standard black tint (I'm colorblind so I take a pass on knowing these kind of things with any certainty). Bring me all the sweet, sweet vintage oddball goodness!
