Missed the game to attend the first round of the NHL Draft at Staples Center; had a great time, hope to see the draft in Anaheim in the near future.

• Rafael Furcal stole his 10th base of the season.
• Manny Ramirez was the only Dodger to reach base more than once (2 Singles).
• The offense struck out 10 times, drew 3 walks, and had no extra-base hits.
• Charlie Haeger was DFA'd. Jon Link was called up yet again to replace him. We'll see if a team takes a chance on Charlie; I would.

"It's just frustrating. The whole season has been frustrating," said the 26-year-old Haeger. "To not throw well, to be on the DL, the throw twice in nearly two months. Last night I think I was one out away from having a decent game. It's frustrating."

He was asked if he had a fair shot.

"Early in the season I did," he said. "I had five starts. But I feel like, coming off the DL, throwing twice in the span of two months, I don't know how fair that is. I had an opportunity early in the season to throw the ball well and didn't. But it was a good experience here. It's been a rough season, but I fell like last night I threw the ball pretty well and feel like it's back, I found it again. Obviously, I'm disappointed. I want to be here."

I've said this in a few places, but I do not hold Matt Kemp responsible at all for his "part" in last night's 9th inning. Brian Fuentes balked, plain and simple. Kemp should be taking a secondary lead when the pitcher begins to motion towards home plate, which is what Fuentes did. The fact that it wasn't called a balk, as it clearly should have been, isn't Kemp's fault.

Dodgers Notes From Tuesday's Game 6/22/2010

• Matt Kemp hit his 12th HR of the season, a beautiful shot to right-center.
• Jamey Carroll stole his 5th base of the season.

• The offense struck out 6 times, drew 2 walks, and had 3 extra-base hits.

Dodgers News Round-Up

Russell Martin sat for two consecutive games earlier this week, finally getting the rest a catcher should be getting on the regular, as A.J. Ellis actually got a somewhat extended amount of playing time. He only received rest, however, because he's a bit banged up, to be expected for a catcher, but especially one that plays as much as Russell does. Joe Torre is a habitual over-user of certain players and positions (see: Ramon Troncoso's corpsy arm), so any rest for Russ is good rest in my book.

"Just getting another day and getting fully rested," Martin said. "It's just something that maybe one day can make me feel a lot better. I don't want to tell you what it is."

"Just watching him, his swing was getting bigger, longer," manager Joe Torre said. "You'd have to be in the dugout to experience the frustration sometimes when he comes in. It was just time I think to take a step back."

Charlie Haeger was sent back to the DL, this time around with a sprained toe. Jon Link was recalled for the third time this season.

"I just don't think that I'm healthy yet," Haeger said. "I don't want to use it as an excuse."

"We'll just see if we can get this better," manager Joe Torre said.

Link was then sent right back to make room for the re-activated and still-goateed George Sherrill.

Wasn't around for this one, as I went to the Inland Empire 66ers game with a friend. Awesome finish, 66ers pulled it out in the ninth. Recap with photos galore end of the week. Taped this game though, I'll watch it at some point this week.

"It wasn't easy to tell Travis," said manager Joe Torre.

"I'm just happy I got the opportunity to pitch in a game situation," said the rookie. "They didn't have to explain. I'm disappointed to be going down, but I understand why it happened. They need the arms."

Andre Ethier has been rehabbing his broken pinkie, and is on track to return Monday.

Carlos Monasterios will start Wednesday.

Charlie Haeger is rehabbing and though he was scheduled to return this week and start Tuesday, his foot problem has not subsided, and when he returns is unknown. From the above article:

"Haeger's foot problem hasn't gone away. We saw him limping on the video [from a Saturday appearance]," said manager Joe Torre. "We're going to just put him off."

George Sherrill appears to be nearing a return from his "back injury", and once he's made a reported 4 rehab appearances, he'll be back once his 15-day purgatory has ended.

"I felt my timing was a lot better," Sherrill said. "I still feel a little something in the back, but it doesn't grab at all. If they want me to go somewhere, I'll go. I know they want me to be with [Triple-A Albuquerque pitching coach Jim] Slaton, but they're on the road."

Vicente Padilla is on track to return in the middle of June.

"He didn't like his command, the sinker wasn't real good, but he threw breaking balls and splits," pitching coach Rick Honeycutt said. "He'll take two days off, throw a bullpen at home and we'll look at a rehab start at San Bernardino Thursday. He'll probably need three of those."

Padilla also found himself in some hot water in Colorado, but it appears that nothing will come of that. Vin Scully Is My Homeboy has all of your Padilla news, as always.

Dodgers Links On A Sunday Night

Andre Ethier had a splint placed on his fractured right pinkie. He'll try to swing a bat, but if I were a guessing man, I think a DL stint is still more likely than not. [Ethier Has Splint Placed On Broken Finger]

"We're hoping he's able to function, but we'll see," Torre said before the exam. "It's sore today. The trainers have been in touch."

"Over the next couple days, we'll see if there's a comfort level for him. We'll give him a day or two to let the soreness out and see what he can do with it and decide if it's enough. The last thing we want is to have him go out and do something and get into bad habits and wind up with a bad situation."

Torre related how difficult it is for a hitter to swing a bat with a broken finger, even a pinkie like the right one Ethier broke Saturday night in batting practice. Ethier explained that the finger "contorted" under the knob of the bat during a swing and the pressure of the bat cracked the first knuckle.

Ramon Ortiz will get another start. He'll take the mound on Wednesday. OY. VEY. The moral of this story, again, is that being a veteran means your leash is ridiculously long with the Dodgers. Struggle n the majors as a veteran and you get shot after shot, but prove things in the bigs, as James McDonald and Scott Elbert have done in varying sample sizes, then struggle a bit in the minors, and you're doomed to minor league servitude. "Really, there's nobody other than him," said Torre. "Carlos Monasterios [who also made a spot start May 1] was under consideration. Probably because Ortiz is the most experienced guy. We started Monasterios one time and had Ortiz behind him. When [Ortiz] gave us 80-plus pitches [last Saturday], we had a better feel for what we'd get out of him."

He will need several bullpen sessions and at least three Minor League rehab starts before he returns, which manager Joe Torre said remains some time in July.

As obvious as it was becoming by the day, the Dodgers finally placed a pitcher on the DL in order to recall John Ely in time to start Tuesday in Arizona. The pitcher is Charlie Haeger, the injury is plantar fasciitis, the foot injured is his right.

The same article mentions Ramon Ortiz will almost certainly start Friday.

George Sherrill and Dodger Rotation News

George Sherrill has been watching video of Billy Wagner to try and fix his problems.

"I was telling some of the guys, thank God the Red Sox and Yankees went to a rain delay and [Billy] Wagner pitched," Sherrill said. "I've always been told I'm close to how he pitched."

"All the other stuff I've been doing didn't even matter," Sherrill said. "Everything I've done all season, didn't matter."

Too bad Sherrill doesn't come close to Wagner's past excellence or his current usefulness. And last time I checked, baseball doesn't do do-overs, so Sherrill's awfulness has mattered.

And counted.

Vicente Padilla won't be back until June at the earliest as he works his way back from a forearm injury, which we already knew from previous reports.

Charlie Haeger won't make the trip to Arizona, and is apparently dealing with a heel injury. All of this is code, and obvious code at that, for "DL stint" to allow for John Ely's recall after his recent and uncalled for demotion. Not that Haeger might not be injured, but someone was going to be DL'd in all likelihood. At least DL'ing Haeger allows them to keep him and not expose him to waivers, which would have been the case had they attempted to send him down to AAA.

Haeger said Sunday that his right heel has been bothering him and that he has been receiving treatment for it. He said he expects to see a doctor on Monday locally.

"I think we're going to go see a doctor this week and make sure everything's OK with the bone and everything structurally down there," said Haeger, who lasted just five batters in a start against the Rockies on Saturday.

A few minutes before Haeger spoke, manager Joe Torre said he was unsure whether Haeger would travel. Haeger did not speak of any physical problems until Sunday, saying he was fine after Saturday's start.

John Ely Back To AAA, Ramon Ortiz Lucky To Be A Veteran

The Dodgers activated Jeff Weaver prior to Friday's game, and in order to do so had to clear a spot on the 25-man roster. The obvious guy to remove would be Ramon Ortiz, he of the general suckiness and awful pitching. Instead, they opted to send John Ely back down to AAA.

I, along with pretty much every other Dodger fan, saw this one coming. Most of us hoped differently, but knew that unless the Dodgers fundamentally change their approach to roster management, it was going to come to this.

Now I don't have a problem if the Dodgers feel AAA is the best spot for Ely for the time being. Ely isn't an elite prospect and doesn't have tremendous stuff, but I think if he reaches his ceiling he can be a solid contributor in the back end of the rotation, and if he were to surpass his ceiling, could potentially be a serviceable fringe Number 3 starter.

John Ely had minor league options left, and could be sent down without being exposed to waivers; Ramon Ortiz could not, and could be claimed if the club tried to send him down. Would he have been claimed? I wouldn't if the decision were mine, but he probably could have found work or at least the opportunity of work elsewhere. That being said, the Dodgers were actually scared to lose him, and thus kept him on the 25-man roster.

Let me repeat that: the Dodgers fear that without Ramon Ortiz pitching for them, the bullpen would suffer, and consequently the team would suffer. Life without Ramon Ortiz would be worse in the eyes of Dodgers brass with a say in this decision.

Ely could very well be recalled for Tuesday's game, but only if a pitcher is DL'd before then, and after Charlie Haeger's "start" Saturday and George Sherrill being George Sherrill, that seems more and more likely by the second.

• Charlie Haeger, back in the rotation after a stint of literally just sitting in the bullpen, followed by a blowout long-relief appearance, did not record an out and was pulled after 4 batters (5 ER, 2 Hits, 0 K, 3 BB, 22 pitches - 8 for strikes). Ramon Ortiz was equally unappealing in relief.
• Haeger may have just signed his pink slip, though I would still keep him over Ortiz.
• Bullpen: 9 IP, 3 ER, 9 Hits, 10 K, 2 BB. 4 Relievers.
• Manny Ramirez returned after a 15-day DL stint with a right calf injury and singled. As mentioned yesterday, Xavier Paul returned to AAA Albuquerque and Garret Anderson remained the luckiest man on the face of the Earth, employed for another day. Hopefully not with the Dodgers for much longer.
• Andre Ethier (Double, 2 Singles) reached base 3 times.
• The offense struck out 7 times, walked 2 times, and had 1 extra-base hit.
• It appears someone will be DL'd, phantom injury or otherwise, to allow John Ely to be recalled and start Tuesday. Unless I'm missing something, which is quite possible. I guess Jeff Weaver could start even with having thrown an inning tonight, but two days rest is a recipe for awful. Either way, lot of dead weight on the team right now. But they're veterans, so it's seasoned dead weight.
• Iron Man 2 was pretty good, so that's a positive for the day.

Today's game has been rained out, so our first doubleheader of the young season comes tomorrow. Rotation questions still to be answered by Joe Torre. Let's just remind him: NO RAMON ORTIZ.

Damn, now I have to actually do my other work. At least tonight brings us House and 24. Jack Bauer wouldn't let a little rain stop him from saving New York.

UPDATE: As I was about to post this, Dylan Hernandez Tweeted that Hiroki Kuroda will pitch Game 1 Tuesday and Charlie Haeger will in fact move up a day and pitch Game 2. Questions answered.

Dodgers Links On A Saturday Night

Joe Torre has confidence in Charlie Haeger as his 5th starter. As he should: Charlie Knuckles can eat a ton of innings, provide relief support in between starts if necessary, which he has already done once this season, and when that knuckleball is dancing, can mow 'em down, to the tune of 12 strikeouts in his first start on April 11th against the Marlins. • Charlie Haeger went 5.1 IP (4 Runs [3 ER], 5 Hits, 3 K, 2 BB, 2 HR Allowed, 110 pitches - 67 for strikes). Two HRs from Adam Dunn did him in, but there's no shame in being taken yard by Dunn. Dunn's first long-ball was truly a majestic shot.
• Bullpen: 2.2 IP, 1 ER, 1 Hit, O K, 4 BB. All Ramon Ortiz, still hanging on to that valuable roster spot.
  
• Ronnie Belliard (2 Singles, BB) reached base 3 times, while Blake DeWitt (Double, IBB) reached twice.
• Matt Kemp did not reach base, the first time all season he has failed to reach base in a game.
• Manny Ramirez hit the 15-day DL due to his right calf injury, and is replaced on the roster by Xavier Paul.

• Charlie Haeger went 3 innings and struggled with his command of the knuckleball (7 Runs [5 ER], 7 Hits, 3 K, 5 BB, 1 Hit Batter, 97 pitches - 49 for strikes).
• Bullpen: 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 Hits, 4 K, 1 BB, 1 WP.
• 4 regulars had the day off due to injury and today being a day game after a night game, including Manny, out with a tight right calf.
• A.J. Ellis (Double, Single, BB) reached base 3 times while Jamey Carroll (2 Singles) reached base twice.
• BAD DODGER DEFENSE: Ellis and Carroll each committed an error, while Ronnie Belliard also misplayed a ball and Andre Ethier couldn't hold on to a shallow pop-up, sliding and coming up empty.
  
• The offense struck out 8 times and drew only 2 walks.
  

Manny To Miss Game Today

Manny will miss today's game after leaving last night's contest early with right calf tightness. He's replaced by Garret Anderson.

Rafael Furcal and Casey Blake also get the game off, with Jamey Carroll and Ronnie Belliard slotted in to replace them, respectively.

A.J. Ellis will once again catch Charlie Haeger, giving Russ Martin a much needed day off.

Notes From Wednesday's Game 4/14/2010

Arizona 9, Dodgers 7.

Box Score.

• Chad Billingsley went 5.2 innings (6 ER, 8 Hits, 5 K, 3 BB [1 IBB], 1 HR Allowed, 116 pitches - 66 for strikes).

His first 3 innings looked like this: O Runs, 1 Hit, 3 K, 0 BB. The next 2.2 IP: 6 ER, 7 Hits, 2 K, 3 BB [1 IBB], 1 HR Allowed. I'm not worried though, as one hit was an infield single, two others just missed being caught, and I thought a couple of pitches that were called balls were strikes (perhaps that would have changed the outcome of an at-bat here and there). Oh, and it's one start, and it's April, and Chad is healthy and exceptionally talented.

No matter which pitcher you happen to consider the best starter in the game - Lincecum, Halladay, etc. -, know this: they all have poor starts during a season.

• Bullpen: 5.1 IP, 3 ER, 6 Hits, 4 K, 6 BB [1 IBB], 1 WP, 1 HR Allowed.
• Matt Kemp clubbed his 3rd HR of the season, and has HRs in consecutive games, both to right-center.
• Kemp stole his second base of the season, and Rafael Furcal stole his 4th. Furcal did not swipe his 4th base in 2009 until June 9th.
• Manny (Double, 2 Singles, BB) and Russell Martin (Double, 2 Singles, BB) each reached base 4 times, Kemp (HR, Single, BB), Andre Ethier (3 Singles), and Furcal (3 Singles) each reached 3 times, and James Loney (2 Singles) reached base twice.
  
• Carlos Monasterios was not effective in the third of an inning he pitched (HR, BB, long flyout, BB), but his arm is electric, and he's absolutely worth keeping in the pen all year, as is required for a Rule 5 Selection.
• Charlie Haeger, slated to start on Saturday, entered in relief in the 9th inning, and immediately struck out Justin Upton on a nasty, dancing knuckleball. He threw a scoreless inning, giving up a walk (looked like a 3rd strike to me) and a single.
• Jonathan Broxton was finally used in a close game, pitching a scoreless 10th inning and striking out 2 D-Backs swinging.
• Russ Ortiz: STILL. NOT. GOOD. DFA! DFA!
  
• Joel McHale, star of the extremely funny show Community, threw out the first pitch.

• Charlie Haeger, making his first start of the season, went 6 very effective innings (4 Runs [3 ER], 3 Hits, 12 K, 4 BB, 1 HR Allowed, 3 WP, 117 pitches - 67 for strikes). The knuckle ball was dancing all game long, and A.J. Ellis had his problems holding onto it, but Haeger did what he's asked to do out of the 5th spot in the rotation: keep the team in the game and eat innings.
• Haeger struck out 7 of the first 10 batters he faced, struck out the side in the 3rd inning, and had at least 2 Ks in each of the first 5 innings.
  
• Bullpen: 2 IP, 2 ER, 2 Hits, 1 K, 1 BB.
